a hem, as on a handkerchief, made by drawing out several parallel threads and
catching together the cross threads in uniform groups.
Damask (a type of "jacquard") is a
fabric of silk, wool, linen, cotton, or synthetic fibers, with a pattern formed
by weaving. The term originally referred to ornamental silk fabrics from Damascus which were elaborately woven in colors, sometimes with the
addition of gold and other metallic threads. Today, it generally denotes a
linen texture richly figured inthe weaving with flowers, fruit, forms of animal
life, and other types of ornament.
Embroidery is an ancient variety of decorative
needlework in which designs and pictures are created by stitching strands of
some material on to a layer of another material, and has traditionally been
used to decorate clothing and household furnishings such as table linens, tray
cloths, towels, and bedding.
